The day of Latin America's Cultural Integration
By Marie Busquere
Last July 24th, for the day of Latin American Integration, the headquarters of the Foundation CICLO welcomed a conference about the intercultural dialogue and colonization of different populations, with the special participation of professionals on the subject, interns of the Foundation and people from the outside as well.
All this for a one goal: realize the importance played by the languages during the colonization and, to demonstrate the influence and role during the colonization process, and see, nowadays, what those testimonies left behind.
This conference allowed me to take into account that languages revealed to be true tools for imperialism and have a personal version of the subject through a country who suffered it. Nowadays, their power stays important and asserted.
However, I could not help doing the link with one of the main problem of this century.
In a globalized context, languages tend to disappear, especially those spoken by indigenous. What is more, they are precious languages because they contain knowledge, transmitted orally and through generations as well as important information such as medicinal plants, all is lost.
To conclude my personal opinion, I would say that languages are more than communication tools, they privilege the preservation of immaterial patrimony such as all oral traditions and all things that make part of country’s folklore. I find it depressing that nowadays we lose those traditions and that we tend to turn towards dominant languages which translates ,indirectly, as a new era of colonialism.
