Graffitis in Ramos Mejía

By Olivier Macé

When I took a walk in Ramos Mejia's streets, I had the luck to cross a disused building which is used to a wall of graffitis. After some researches, I learnt that this warehouse, located in 900 of the street Alvear, belongs to the municipality which gave it to the graffers in a way to express all their art there. Camera in my pocket, I thus returned on the spot to immortalize their work.

Some drawings are only an outline of the high level of Ramos Mejia's graffers, where the North American and European influence prevail as everywhere. The most represented styles on the building are "Wild Style", "Bubbles", "Model Pastel" and also of numerous icons and "Abstract" graffitis. Even if some of them are not very elaborated, there are many others which represent a beautiful sample of specimens, and the amateurs who will come by a roundabout way will not be disappointed of what they will see.

For this place of urban expression, I would like to thank the municipality for the provision of the building and especially the more or less anonymous artists who did it as the authors.

Teach Arab

By Soufiane Bassit
(Soufiane with student Graciela)

My name is Soufiane and I am an Arabic teacher in the Foundation CICLO, among other many things. I was born and lived in Morocco for 19 years, in Casablanca more exactly. So I am lucky to speak the Arabic and to teach it in the foundation once per week.

The Arab is spoken in 17 countries across the world and speak it opens many doors to travel or for business.

I teach it with the method CICLO, that is to say with images, texts, music and an interaction that allows you to speak the language at the end of the course. The Arab seems to be difficult to learn. The truth is, that initially is more difficult to learn it that the Spanish, so much to write it like to read it, but later the Arab is easier and less complicated than the French or Spanish.

It is a new experience for me because I study in a business school in France. I like to teach this language and especially to make know my culture through songs and texts. The Arabic culture is more than the food and the dance, it is a history, customs, a way of seeing the different world.

¿Vos hablas castellano?

By Djouroukoro Diallo

After some days in Buenos Aires we must learn Spanish, which is not necessarily the same one as the Spanish from Spain. Because it is called Castellano, as the one spoken in Spain, Spanish but with Argentinean particularity. One of the first questions that we can answer can be ¿Vos hablas castellano? (do you speak spanish). In the Argentinian Castellano or Spanish is spoken in such a way that the Spanish speaker of another culture understands well what it says.

When we walk for a street, we have to always count the number of cuadras (block) that separates us from our aim. It is very easy to hear in Buenos Aires “vos seguí una, dos, tres, cuatro cuadras….” And then follows the rest of the indication.
In the large avenues, cars go very fast and because of it we have to, always, run almost to cross. If we see people doing queue near an avenue it is a bus stop. It is very frequent seeing people queuing opposite to public places.

Something that can seem to be strange when we do not know it. For example, I went to a bank to change money. But the bank yet was not opened. After some minutes many people came and they started queuing and I did not understand this behavior. These little things happen and give us a strange feeling of lack of courtesy or respect in front of our hosts.

One of the most eye-catching phenomenon is the communicability of the people and their kindness. In Buenos Aires we can speak and ask without fear, unreservedly. The people give you response and give you the information that you need. But, the information asked to a cartonero, boys who sell cartons in handcart, or to a police officer, can be complicated enough to deal. After a certain time of questions and answers without being able to communicate really, a cartonero said to me " I scram " saying that he must go away because he was with his sister who is "buttoned" that means married.

Here I have been charmed with eating again in a Mc Donald. This way, I went away to the most nearby of the foundation CICLO in Ramos Mejía's neighborhood. The police officer was asking me on my origin and we began a conversation. Along this one, I was asking him on his salary and was speaking to myself about "lucas" of pesos that mean thousand in the normal language. This word was one of the numerous ones that my interlocutor was using. It is to say that it is necessary to do a course on the Argentinian lunfardos before coming in this country to be able to communicate with people of different social levels.

Here, the train like the bus comes at any time without respect of the program. Everything happens as if there was no program for public transport. Because of it we need coins, in the transport everything is paid by coins. The most difficult thing is to recognize the place where you must go down or read with attention the schedule and follow the different stops.

If we go out at night we can understand that the socialization here is very important. The people go out a lot and go eating with friends and families. In addition the frequency of couples in every place is very eye-catching. This way, a waitress can ask ¿de donde sos vos? (where are you from) Or once again ¿Vos hablas castellano? Because here castellano is spoken and not spanish.

The “LUNFARDO”

By Sergueï Dardaine

The Lunfardo finds its origins in the neighborhood of “La Boca” that is located in a port zone of Buenos Aires. It was born there since it was the place where the European immigrants were landing to look for work. Originally it was a marginal language spoken by the low society of “porteños”, translating a certain cultural variety.

This way so, it is a symbol of social integration more than a simple combination of proper languages. Nowadays it has popularized and spread to all the social classes and to other countries around the Río de la Plata or to Uruguay for example. It might be defined as a set of words from foreign origin (English, Italian, Brazilian, French, German, Spanish, …) mixed to the standard Spanish. It is really possible to say that it is a language of tolerance among cultures and of social integration in general.

Its institutionalization was concreted thanks to the Sea Academy of the Lunfardo that was founded on December 21, 1962. It is located in the United States street, number 1379, in the neighborhood San Cristóbal of Buenos Aires. It is about a NGO without lucrative ends that devotes itself specially to the linguistic investigation of the language of Buenos Aires.

The author the more related to the Lunfardo is undoubtedly Jose Gobello. In effect, it is one of the most interested and the one who most studied it. Also it is possible to mention Oscar Conde who published recently one of Lunfardo's last etymological dictionaries (with the origin of the words).

Arte Oeste, a painting

By Fundación CICLO

On Saturday, the 5th of July started Arte Oeste, the artists' exhibition of the zone that took place in Foundation CICLO, in its head office of Alvear 155, Ramos Mejía.

The event appeared to be a whole success. The public was enthousiastic and massive and seemed to be very pleased by the artists and their works. The inaugural wine took place in a pleasant and very special way, with an emotive speech of the Director of the Foundation, Dra. María Knop, where she not only was grateful for the wonderful participation of the exhibitors, but also for the interns and volunteers, who organized the exhibition with effort and dedication.

The people crossed the establishment enjoying the diverse works, taking a refreshment and savouring some of the morsels offered during the event. During the tour it was possible to appreciate from abstract pictures up to sculptures made in elements such as metal, macilla and plates, passing for drawings in cinder, three-dimensional art and embossings.

The public could participate to the inauguration of Arte Oeste leaving his opinions and also leaving his information for the contest of a spectacular Flat TV, as well as to know a bit more about CICLO and its important message and to its wonderful collaborators.

The exhibition ends this weekend, July 12 and 13 from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. From now you are still all invited to visit the exhibition and know these valuable artists of the west zone.

For more information about Arte Oeste or Foundation CICLO, you can approach to our head office of Alvear 155, Ramos Mejía or call 4464-1272 / 4658-1193.

My route to Ramos Mejía's schools

By Julie Pacotte

“¡Hola Buen Día! I come from the Foundation Ciclo where we are organizing an event of art for the first two weekends of July ….” On this way begins my speech in front of the directors or secretaries of Ramos Mejía's schools. In general the doorman receives me first (or the portera) and I ask him if I can communicate with the direction or the secretary. After speaking only across a door or a window, I can finally enter into the school and observe what Ramos Mejía's schools look like: I would say that the majority are spacious enough, but they are all different; some are more decorated than the others (For example by drawings of the pupils) or seem to be "more "serious", more religious. I was very well received in the great majority of these schools, the directors - and principals - seemed to be very interested in the event, and were going to comment on it to the teachers of art of his/her school.

I seize the opportunity to comment that I was surprised or that it was different from a French school. It seems to me that the major difference is in the day’s organization. In effect, in France all the pupils (or almost all) go to the school in the morning AND in the afternoon, the concept of ongoing (morning or afternoon) does not exist. Continuing on the topic, the French pupils, in general, do not go to the school on Wednesday but they have to go on Saturday morning, which tends to annoy their parents, jaja.
They are also very vagabonds compared with their Argentinean companions: they have approximately 17 weeks of vacations during the year!

To end, for what I was surprised, I am only going to mention that on having entered two schools they asked for my ID card: did i had face of delinquant? Jaja….

The artists of the West zone, now, have somewhere to expose

Organized by the Foundation Ciclo

The first two weekends of July took place the first exhibition of art named Arte Oeste with free entry in the Foundation Ciclo head office Alvear 155, Ramos Mejía. The above mentioned exhibition is part of the program "Foundation Ciclo for the diffusion of the Latin-American culture" that favours and promotes the culture, the education and the traditions of the zone.

In this sense, the aim of this exhibition was to propose to the artists of the zone west of the Great Buenos Aires to be squeezed across their works in an agreeable place and of cultural exchange and also in order that the people enjoy an artistic space of expression.

This first edition was relying on the presence of 21 artists of the zone west of the Great Buenos Aires who exposed 35 authentic works (paintings and sculptures) of topics and different styles.

After an intensive advertising campaign with different means of communications, the Foundation Ciclo did of this first edition a real success. And so, we received the visit of more than 100 persons of the zone.

In addition, in this occasion we were relying on the collaboration of 5 sponsors that are Wal-Mart, McDonald's, Warehouse Old Espaldero, Distributor Rivadavia Queso and Cold cut, Orion Servicios.

At the end of this exhibition 18 prizes were given as a television, some scholarships (courses and careers) of the Foundation Ciclo and vouchers of Mc Donald's.

After the success of the event, the Foundation Ciclo might repeat the operation next year.
