After a quite active and interesting introduction I was ready to start working at the foundation. In two days my colleagues taught me the patented teaching method and the rules and vision of the foundation. I didn’t have much time to recover from my flight because the day
after my crash course I already had to teach English classes. I was very excited because this was the first time I would be a teacher! A little bit shaky and stuttering I started my class but after a while I discovered that my English was much better than my students (which gave me some confidence in my teaching skills)! After a few weeks of a super intensive course my class had to make the final exam and for a moment I was nervous again… The results of the exams would show whether the students had understood something of the English course and my teaching method… Well, sure they did! All the students passed their exam so there was nothing to worry about.
Besides teaching I also had to take care of the diffusion of our vacancy to recruit new trainees from all over the world. I had to improve the Dutch vacancy and I also translated the vacancy in English. After this job I started writing many Universities in Europe but also to the United States and Australia. It was very nice to see when these Universities placed our vacancy at their online job bank and when students sent their motivation letter to our foundation! I received mails from students from Sweden, Australia, Germany, France, Belgium and even Lithuania and Russia! The thing I like most about this job is the international contact you have and the common interest in Latin America and voluntary work, and the cultural awareness you share together.
Besides the diffusion of the internship I also enjoyed a project of my lovely colleague Noortje. She arranged a meeting with children from a primary school in Ramos Mejía. She taught the children about Anne Frank, a little bit about the Second World War and especially about discrimination and human rights, and afterwards we have watched the movie ´The boy with the striped pyjamas´. It was a very instructive and interesting afternoon! The children were so sweet and interested in the Anne Frank project and for me it was a special experience to learn a little bit more about the daily life of the children of Ramos Mejía!
Another interesting event was the Dutch evening at the foundation. Together with my two Dutch colleagues we had the opportunity to share our culture with the Argentine people. I was very exciting to see that so many visitors came to the event to learn more about our culture, to discuss a bit about controversial topics of the Dutch Society and the enjoy some typical Dutch delicacies!
All in all working at Fundación CICLO is a great experience! You will learn how to work with Argentine colleagues (this will not always be easy because of cultural differences at the working place but in the end this is will be a great learning experience too). Furthermore, during your internship you will learn more about the Argentine culture, habits, customs, interests, you will improve your Spanish and in the end you will enrich your life with a beautiful experience in a special and lovely city called Buenos Aires. Thank you Foundación CICLO for giving me this opportunity!!!
