A priori, visit a cemetery is nothing very attractive. We imagine a place more or less gloomy where the tombs are all more uninspiring.
The Recoleta’s cemetery wonderfully breaks these prejudices. Rounded of parcs and buildings in the chic district of Recoleta, the cemetery has nothing to envy to the Père Lachaise in Paris. Its construction started in the 20th century. Nowadays, 4800 tumbs are splitted on around 55 000 m2. If only the entrance, imposing by its majestuous strenght with its latin maxim « Requiescant In Pace ».
Two factors caractericize the particularity of the cemetery: the tombs architecture and numerous celebrities rest in peace there. The archways just are unique. They rarely do less than 3 meters high and each distinguible by their architecture. The pathes add to this solenel atmosphere which comes from this place, quasi making us forget that we are in the city center.
Second factor, the cemetery shelters the most famous celebrities, as intelectual as politic, of Argentina. María Eva Duarte de Perón, a mythic woman of the 20th century, is the best exemple. We can also find the vaults of several presidents such as Hipólito Yigoyen or Arturo Umberto Illia. Two Nobel Prices rest as well in the cemetery : Luis Frederico Leloir (Nobel price for chemistery in 1970) and Carlos Saavedra Lamas (Nobel price of peace in 1936). At least, several writters as José Hernández and Victoria Ocampo, doctors, artists of cinema or sportsmen as Martín Karadagián, former wrestler and actor, have their place as well.
The cemetery of Recoleta looks like a mandatory destination for anyone who wishes to discover another conception of cemetery. For sure, you will get out bewitched.
